I find it sickening that a person like Phaneuf would do this. He has nothing to prove in this game. Why make a hit like that in such a meaningless game?
his feet were on the ice when contact was made. Okposo's head was down from half way between the red line and blue line so he didnt even see him coming. One most important rules in hockey is keep your head up. The hit is legal and highly doubt phanuef get disciplined for it
Okposo got knocked off balance before the hit. It's hard to be ready for a hit from a guy like Phaneuf after having been shoved from behind by a backchecker, your head instinctively goes down for a split second and that's all it took. Dion didn't leave his feet before impact, but to be bigger than another guy, see him extremely vulnerable and lean into it as much as Dion did shows no respect for the game or its players. He then keeps is gloves on in the scrum and backs down when he got challenged TWICE later in the game. I know a big hitter will push the line of legality every once in a while, but the real tough guys deal with the consequences and drop the gloves, it's the code.
wow.... what an awesome hit... totally legal though. I mean there are four or 5 ways to watch the hit. Dion had a perfect chance to get the puck of Okposo and Okposo being a sohphomore made a critical mistake even more important when playing against Dion... NEVER FOCUS ON THE PUCK.... always always keep your eyes away from the puck.. the puck is like the plague to look at.. thats proof of it right there

I just realized that the Islanders player that went after Phaneuf jumped off the bench!
Yeah LOL but are they going to claim it was a line change?
There's no way it was though

preseason or not it was a clean hit just played the puck and his feet never left the round nice hit
I agree 100%
Didn't leave hit feet? I see at least one of you is BLIND!
There are several screen shots on the web right now that are really blurry but look like at the moment of impact Phaneuf's skate is on the ice

i love dion but i must admit. that was DIRTY. ouch
Looks clean to me. Ref thought the same. None of the players claimed it was a bad hit; they were only upset he refused to fight.
Personally I prefer fast pack moving D but that's how Dion plays and the player must have been nuts to fall asleep when Phaneuf was on ice.
Too bad it wasn't Crosby getting hit. I'd like that crybaby to get his shit rocked.
